Local Musicians of the Newman Center at the University of Washington Offer Time and Talent for Distant At-Risk Children
Seattle, Wash. -- (Sept. 18, 2007) -- Members of the Newman Center Music Ministry at the University of Washington are teaming up to raise funds for the English Program of Camino Seguro, Spanish for Safe Passage, in Guatemala City. Give Me the Words! is a benefit concert to be held on October 13 at 8 p.m. at St Joseph's Church in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. This is the final stage for meeting their $10,000 fundraising goal.
Camino Seguro is an organization based in the U.S. dedicated to empowering the poorest at-risk children of families living and working in the community of the Guatemala City garbage dump by creating opportunities and fostering dignity through the power of education. The newly created English Program will further the educational goals of Camino Seguro--a powerful tool in ending poverty. English competency has a direct impact on the children's future success. Armed with fluency in English, the children have an excellent chance at breaking the cycle of generational poverty--speaking to a brighter future for themselves and their families, if we would just give them the words.
Give Me the Words! is the brainchild of Mars Tanumihardja, leader of the 7 p.m. music ministry of the Newman Center at UW. Newman's comprehensive music ministry includes musicians and singers from the three Sunday choirs: 10 a.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m.. The men and women of the three choirs come from different areas of academia and life: undergraduates, graduate students, alumni, transfer students, and young adults who found their niches within Newman. The Newman Center at UW is a Catholic ministry whose primary mission is to serve the University of Washington community. There are Newman Centers at many universities around the country, which were inspired by John Henry Cardinal Newman.
A former choir member's casual email from Guatemala City to Mr. Tanumihardja sparked the idea for the multi-faceted fundraising effort, culminating in the Give Me the Words! concert, where the Newman musicians will be performing contemporary Christian music. Members from every choir jumped at the chance to offer their musical and planning skills to help a community and culture outside of their own experiences. The other fundraising events include poker nights, a benefit dinner at Julia's Indonesian Kitchen, and corporate donations. Camino Seguro is not completely new to the University of Washington, however. In 2006 a team from the UW Landscape Architecture Design/Build Program started a project that will span several years to design and landscape a park for the children to use and learn about the environment.
